The marae is a sacred open meeting area, which is generally located in front of the ‘Whare Runanga’, a communal meeting house.  It is the area of greatest mana and spirituality; a place of great dignity where Maori customs are given their purest expression. The whare is usually symbolically designed in honour of powerful ancestors.
